2012 Football Board – Week 16 Recap

No stories this time, it’s serious business here as the board is winding down. I’ve closed out a number of bets so that we can have a good picture of what needs to happen in week 17.

Closed Bets

  1. Who has more fantasy points in week 16: Jets D/ST or Chargers D/ST?
The Chargers dominated this one 24-6.
    Fan Vote: Chargers D/ST (55%)
    Winner: Chargers D/ST (Matthew)
  2. Is C. Kaepernick a top 10 QB in week 16?
Colin must missed out on the top 10 by just one point and finished tied for 11th.
    Fan Vote: Yes (54%)
    Winner: No (Nate)
  3. Who has more fantasy points in week 16: M. Turner or M. Leshoure?
Leshoure found the end zone and won 10-5. Other than the score, both backs were essentially the same.
    Fan Vote: M. Turner (71%)
    Winner: M. Leshoure (Matthew)
  4. Is J. Locker a top 20 QB in week 16?
Locker missed out on the top 20 by 3 points. He finished the week with only 8 points.
    Fan Vote: No (52%)
    Winner: No (Nate)
  5. Who has more fantasy points: R. Wayne or P. Garcon?
Wayne leads 154-85. At this point, the bet is out of reach for Garcon. It would be interesting to see how this bet would’ve shaped up if Garcon hadn’t gotten injured.
    Fan Vote: R. Wayne (72%)
    Winner: R. Wayne (Nate)
  6. Over/Under 7.5 wins for the NY Jets?
The Jets lost at San Diego and the best they can finish is 7-9.
    Fan Vote: Under (80%)
    Winner: Under (Matthew)
  7. Who has more fantasy points: M. Wallace or A. Brown?
Wallace leads 123-88. Brown made up some ground in week 16 but it was too little, too late.
    Fan Vote: A. Brown (67%)
    Winner: M. Wallace (Nate)
  8. Who has more fantasy points: M. Schaub or J. Cutler?
Schaub leads 211-156. Schaub struggled again in week 16 but Cutler matched him and eliminated himself from the bet.
    Fan Vote: J. Cutler (70%)
    Winner: M. Schaub (Nate)
  9. Is D. McFadden a top 3 RB (using ppg)?
McFadden is at #19 and even if he was healthy for the entire year, he wasn’t a top 3 RB.
    Fan Vote: No (62%)
    Winner: No (Nate)
  10. Who averages more fantasy points per game from week 10 on: R. Wilson or J. Cutler?
Wilson leads 21.7 to 9.2. Wilson has been simply amazing the last month, while Cutler has been Cutler.
    Fan Vote: R. Wilson (62%)
    Winner: R. Wilson (Nate)
  11. Will the NY Giants win at least 10 games and the NFC East?
The Giants did not show up in week 16 and got blown out by the Ravens. The slid down to 2nd place and are now 8-7 on the season. They still have an outside shot at winning the division but will fall short of the 10 wins needed by the bet.
    Fan Vote: No (62%)
    Winner: No (Matthew)

Open Bets

  1. Over/Under 969 receiving yards for T. Smith?
Smith has 855 yards and is on pace for 912 yards. Smith picked up 88 yards in week 16 and kept himself in the bet. He’ll need 115 yards in week 17 to win the bet. It’s certainly not out of the question but I just have a feeling he won’t have this big game.
    Projected winner: Under (Nate)
  2. Who has more fantasy points: F. Gore or S. Jackson?
Gore leads 169-141. Jackson made up solid ground this week and has at least given himself a shot at winning this bet. It’ll take a huge week and for Gore to not do much for Jackson to come from behind and win this.
    Projected winner: F. Gore (Nate)
  3. Over/Under 44.5 targets for D. Branch?
Branch is at 28 targets after picking up 3 targets in week 16. It’s very unlikely that Branch will get the 45 targets but you never know with Belicheck and week 17.
    Projected winner: Under (Matthew)
  4. Will M. Turner be a top 10 RB?
Turner is at #18. The #10 RB is Frank Gore and he currently has 176 points. Michael Turner has 139 points.
    Projected winner: No (Matthew)
  5. Over/Under 23.5 passing TDs for C. Palmer?
Palmer has 22 TDs and was knocked out the game with a rib injury. We’ll have to see how bad the injury is but even if Palmer could play in week 17, the Raiders may see what they have in Pryor.
    Projected winner: Under (Nate)
  6. Who averages more fantasy points per start: R. Wilson or A. Luck?
Luck leads 16.6 to 15.6.  Wilson keeps closing the gap but he still trails Luck by 15 points. Wilson has been the better fantasy QB recently but his bad early season performances will cost him this bet.
    Projected winner: A. Luck (Matthew)
  7. Over/Under 44.5 Targets for any Patriots WR (excludes Welker & Lloyd)?
Julian Edelman leads all other WRs with 32 targets and is done for the year. The next highest is Branch at 28. See what I said about the Branch bet earlier.
    Projected winner: Under (Matthew)
  8. Who has more fantasy points: M. Turner or C. Johnson?
Johnson leads 151-139. Both backs were a disappointment in week 16. I don’t see Turner being able to get enough touches to catch Johnson at this point but all it would take is to stumble in to a pair of TDs and Turner’s won the bet.
    Projected winner: C. Johnson (Matthew)
  9. Who has more fantasy points: P. Thomas or M. Ingram?
Thomas leads 85-82 as both guys had solid week 16s. Thomas gained a little ground and continues to prove that I have no idea what’s going on in the Saints backfield. Ingram has been getting the majority of the carries so I’ll side with him. This bet is either guy’s to win.
    Projected winner: M. Ingram (Matthew)
  10. Who has more fantasy points from week 2 on: M. Schaub or J. Flacco?
Flacco leads 207-197. I don’t know what has happened to Schaub and the Texans. They looked so solid for a long time and now they’re stumbling as they finish out the season. Flacco had an impressive week 16 and took the lead in the wager and he should be able to hold on to it.
    Projected winner: J. Flacco (Matthew)
  11. Who has more fantasy points from week 2 on: B. Roethlisberger or J. Flacco?
Flacco leads 207-182. Flacco’s week 16 performance should put this out of the reach of Roethlisberger.
    Projected winner: J. Flacco (Matthew)
  12. Is M. Turner a top 15 RB from week 4 on?
    Here’s the latest standings.

    # Running Back Points
    1 Adrian Peterson, Min 228
    2 Doug Martin, TB 197
    3 Marshawn Lynch, Sea 187
    4 Arian Foster, Hou 176
    5 Trent Richardson, Cle 150
    6 Alfred Morris, Was 149
    7 Jamaal Charles, KC 143
    8 Chris Johnson, Ten 142
    9 Frank Gore, SF 140
    9 Stevan Ridley, NE 140
    11 Ray Rice, Bal 134
    12 Shonn Greene, NYJ 127
    13 Steven Jackson, StL 126
    14 Matt Forte, Chi 124
    15 C.J. Spiller, Buf 122
    17 Michael Turner, Atl 112

    Projected winner: No (Matthew)

  13. Who averages more fantasy points per game from week 6 on: A. Dalton or A. Luck?
Luck leads 15.6-14.6. Luck leads by 11 points and that ought to be enough to hold off Dalton.
    Projected winner: A. Luck (Matthew)
  14. Who has more fantasy points from week 9 on: L. Fitzgerald or D. Moore?
Moore leads 41-32 as Fitzgerald made a huge come back in week 16 with 11 points. Fitzgerald just needs another week like this and he’ll win the bet but I’m not putting any trust in the Arizona QBs. Moore will probably just eek out a win here.
    Projected winner: D. Moore (Matthew)

Closing Thoughts

After 16 weeks, Nate leads 24-15 and split the weekend wagers 2-2. Throwing in the projections, Nate will win the board 27-26.

In the hypothetical board round up (where the Ingram-Thomas weekly bet does not exist), Nate leads 20-15. With projections, Matthew wins 26-23.

Matthew really needs everything to fall in to place for him to win the board. The one bet that Matthew will really need to root for is the Torrey Smith yardage one. Winning this one will swing the board in his favor. It should be a fun and wild week 17!
